i think the whole purpose of that is to make the kids in highschool curious and go to college for higher education. maybe highschool functions as an institution to separate the curious one from the not? when i was in highschool i see three different types of students: those who go to the teacher and ask a lot of things because they want to know MORE, those who go to the teacher because they don't know what they're doing, and those who want to leave the class as early as possible. the kids who want to know more end up studying seriously in college, because the stuff they want to know more got their interest. some even made it their religion. heh. some of those HS classes are actually what got me into devoting my whole life for physics.
